Homemade Sambar Rice Recipe

Homemade Sambar Rice Recipe

Servings: 5-6 pax

Soaking Time : 30 minutes

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time : 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice ( not basmati)

  • 1/2 cup tur dal

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 small onion sliced into long pieces

  • 1 big tomato chopped into small pieces

  • 1 drumstick chopped into long pieces

  • 1 small brinjal chopped into big cubes

  • 1 potato chopped into big cubes

  • 1 small carrot chopped into big cubes

  • 5-6 french beans chopped into big pieces

  • 2-3 strings curry leaves chopped finely

  • 1/4 tsp asefodita

  • 1 tsp jeera / cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp rai/ mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp methi/ fenugreek seeds

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 1/2 tbsp chilli powder

  • 3 tbsp sambar powder ( MTR brand or any other brand)

  • 1 small tamarind ball

  • some chopped coriander leaves

  • salt as per taste

Method:

  1. Clean and wash the rice and dal together and soak it in a pressure cooker for half an hour in 4 cups water.

  2. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric and 1/2 tsp salt to the soaked rice and dal. Close the lid of the cooker and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.

  3. When the pressure is released open the cooker and keep the rice and dal mixture aside.

  4. Soak the tamarind in some water and remove the pulp from it . Keep aside for future use.

  5. In a heavy based kadai heat 2 tbsp coconut oil or any other oil add the jeera and rai when it splutters add the methi seeds, asefodita, turmeric, curry leaves and sliced onion. Saute the onion till translucent then add the tomatoes along with salt and chilli powder and cook for 2-3 minutes. To it add all the chopped vegetables excluding the brinjal and 1 cup water. Cover and cook stirring occasionally till the vegetables are semi cooked then add the chopped brinjal and the tamarind pulp. Cover and cook again till all the vegetable are cooked.

  6. Add the cooked rice and dal mixture and the sambar powder along with 1 -2 cups water and mix well. Cover and cook for another 5 minutes on low flame stirring at interval.

  7. Remove in a serving dish and garnish with some chopped coriander leaves.

Enjoy this yummy sambar rice for your lunch or dinner.
