Homemade Dalma Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup yellow moong dal
1/2 cup tur dal
salt as per taste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp finely chopped ginger
2 nos finely chopped green chillies
1 no big chopped tomato
1 no onion sliced finely
1/2 cup red pumpkin
1/2 cup yam/suran
1/2 cup brinjal
1/4 cup carrot
1/4 cup beans
1/4 cup potatoes
some chopped coriander leaves
Ingredients for Dry Masala:
2 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
2 nos green cardamom
1/2 tbsp black pepper
2-3 small cinnamon sticks
3-4 whole red chillies
Ingredients For Tadka:
1/4 tsp asefodita/hing
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
1.5 tsp sauf/fennel seeds
1 tsp fenugreek/ methi seeds
1 tsp kalonji/ nigella seeds
1/2 cup cup fresh grated coconut
2 tbsp mustard oil
Dry masala powder as above
Method:
Clean, wash and soak the dals together in 4 cups water for 30 minutes. After the soaking time put the dals along with the water, salt and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker. Cook up to 3 whistles. When the pressure is released open the cooker and keep the dals aside for future use.
Peel and wash the suran, potato, carrot and pumpkin then chop them into medium size cubes. String the beans and also cut them into 1 inch pieces.
Wash and cut the brinjal into small cubes and keep them in salt water.
In a grinder add all the spices of the masala and grind into a fine powder.
In a heavy based vessel add the dal mixture, all the chopped veggies, brinjal, sliced onion, chopped tomato, green chillies, and ginger. If required water can be added to the mixture.
Cover and cook on low flame stirring at intervals till all the veggies are soft and cooked.
Add the ground masala and grated coconut. Mix and stir well. Cook for another 5 minutes then switch off the flame.
In a small pan heat 2 tbsp mustard oil then add the hing , jeera, mustard seeds , sauf , kalonji and methi seeds. Add this tadka to the cooked dalma .
Remove in a serving bowl and garnish with some chopped coriander leaves.
Enjoy this yummy dalma with rice or chapati .
